Fellow Ghanaians, I am a fellow citizen thinking aloud and observing keenly from the shores of the USA the recent developments in my beloved country. And I feel the need to contribute my thoughts to Dec. 28, 2008.
I am very pro-NPP but I think in a mature democracy people should be able to analyze issues and question their own leaders and when they realize the leaders have erred, vote against those undeserving leaders! I have come to five (5) reasons why Akufo-Addo must never become the next President of Ghana.
- The current nature of the apologetic campaign of the governing majority makes me uneasy. It hints of something sinister under their sleeves. Why are they so afraid of losing power if they were indeed practicing GOOD governance? Shouldn't this Good Governance be speaking for itself right now? Instead, they are begging to lead like a thief that has been caught for wrong doing already. Who in their right senses will allow someone to beg to lead them? Leadership is not begged for, it is worked for! And if the Ghanaian populace at large think that by virtue of the works of the current government they don’t deserve to be rewarded with another four years at the helm of affairs, then so be it!
- The circumstances under which the current government is making several turnarounds in this period before the run-off means that the government has been taking advantage of the people and the system for so long and if rewarded with another victory will take advantage of the people again until the next elections when by virtue of this experience (if they win) will wrongly think they can right the wrongs again at election time. Is this the best way for us to encourage our leaders to be taking us for a ride?
- The Akufo-Addo campaign upon all the funds it raised, the several government resources and the so-called good governance and 300% GDP growth only to be bested by the an under-resourced NDC in almost 7 out of 10 regions suggests to me that the former foreign minister (I don’t care who was in charge of his campaign finance) mismanaged the campaign cash and is not ready to manage and judiciously balance a national budget to achieve a desired goal. Moreover, having lost nearly 7 regions also tells me his support is not representative enough of the entire country to warrant his assumption of office as President of Ghana. He lacks the ability to build a broader coalition to govern beyond Ashantis and Akans, who are his base, especially now that we have a divided parliament. He should remember he will not be a president for only Akans!
- The grandiose promises that he made to Ghanaians such as taking us from 3rd world to 1st world is empty. Do you know what it tells me? It tells me that his experience of "acquiring 1st world properties" during his past 8 years in government now sort of warrants him the audacity to think that the nation can also own new "1st world properties" in as little as 8yrs.. But every economist knows this is not possible under our current economic dispensation. It tells me Akufo-Addo lacks integrity and can look into the eyes of Ghanaians and tell us a LIE. What more can we expect of his government? A LIES GALORE! Instead of being realistic with us with regards to where he wants to take the country even if this might hurt, he tells us to close our eyes and BELIEVE as he takes us from 3rd world to 1st world in 8yrs! He cheapens us by thinking we are fools enough for him to tell us what he thinks we want to hear not what we have to hear for the betterment of our dear nation.
- Lastly, any child born anywhere in Ghana should be able to BELIEVE IN GHANA, not in the way Akufo-Addo believes in it. He believes that because his father was once a head of state he should also become one! Each child must be ABLE to BELIEVE that they can become President too one day IF they work hard, just like President-Elect Barack Obama of the United States. Electing Akufo-Addo for President however entrenches dynastic politics in Ghana. It re-enforces the idea that only certain political families can rule. This is a Democracy, not a Dynasty!
