There was pandemonium at Jukwa Watreso D/A Primary School in the Twifo-Hemang-Lower-Denkyira (THLD) district in the Central Region on Friday when the former Assemblyman for the area, Nana Asaahene verbally assaulted the headmaster of the school, Mr. Obed Ocansey for allowing one of the teachers to flog a class 3 pupil for referring to his teacher as a wee (Indian Hemp) smoker.
But for the timely intervention of some teachers and passers by a bloody scene would have emerged. The situation has compelled the school authorities to close down the school until their safety was assured.
A teacher at the school, Lawrence Sackey Rockson, who witnessed the incident told The Chronicle that on the day in question, his colleague teacher, one Mr. Samuel Appiagyei heard students in class 3 referring to him as a wee smoker when he passed by their classroom. When he questioned the reason for that utterance, they disclosed that it was Francis Korang, a pupil in their class who started it all.
Rockson narrated that, Appiagyei, who did not take the issue lightly asked the boy where he got the ridiculous idea from and whether he had seen him smoke before, which the young pupil could not answer.
Korang was flogged by Appiagyei who further warned him never to repeat what he said about him. The little boy reported the incident to his mother at home, who in turn reported the case to the former, assemblyman of the area.
The ex-assemblyman, accompanied by the boy's mother and some other people thronged the school premises and started casting insults at the headmaster and the teachers accusing them of incompetence.
It took the intervention of some passers-by and teachers who whisked the headmaster away to avoid any eventuality.
The ex-assemblyman and his conspirators have been arrested by the Police Unit Committee of the town. The Chronicle learnt that the ex assemblyman is now pleading with the school authorities not to report his conduct to the Ghana Education Service (GES).
Rockson also noted that, last week Friday's incident was the fifth time that such a confrontation had occurred in the school. He said last year, a female teacher almost lost her life from an attack when she punished her students for going wayward.
