A request by the former Chairman for the Klottey Korle constituency, Nii Noi Nortey, to rejoin the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has been put on hold, General Secretary John Boadu has revealed.
According to Mr. Boadu, the national executive council of the party intends to revisit the request after the governing party’s April 25 parliamentary primaries.
Following his loss to Philip Addison in the Klottey Korle parliamentary primary in the lead up to the 2016 general elections, a bitter Nii Noi Nortey decided to contest as an independent candidate but lost to Dr. Zanetor Rawlings of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Many party supporters blamed the NPP's loss on Nii Noi Nortey who they accused of ruining the party’s chances at the polls.
Speaking on ‘Ekosii Sen’ Monday, January 20, John Boadu disclosed that Mr. Nortey has written to the party pleading to rejoin but they have yet to pay any attention to that.
"The national council after our primaries will sit on that case. If you are with the party and lose a primary but you go ahead to contest as an independent candidate, then we can't trust you at all. I called Nii Noi to be part of my operations team after his loss but he decided to contest as an independent candidate,” the NPP General Secretary told host of the Show, Philip Osei Bonsu (OB).
He added that “the amnesty will come after our primaries because we can't allow you to profit from wrongdoing.”
Background
Nii Noi had been elected in a previous NPP primary held in 2015. In that primary, Philip Addison, who was lead counsel for the NPP’s 2012 election petition, polled a meager 22 votes, while Nii Nortey polled 393 votes.
Nii Adjei Tawiah, a third contestant, had 19 votes. But the two – Tawiah and Addison – were unhappy with the outcome of the polls which they had boycotted because their request for a change in the election date was rejected.
They appealed to the party to address their concerns internally, but that failed, forcing them to go to court.
The court ordered a re-run of the elections which Mr. Philip Addison won; compelling an embittered Nii Noi Nortey to go independent.
