Textiles manufacturers say government has still not placed an order to enable them begin producing fabrics for the free school uniform project after it was decided that all materials for the programme should be procured locally.
Last month, Vice President John Mahama told the textile manufacturing companies to ignore reports that a Chinese company had been awarded the contract for the free school uniforms.
He asked the Education Ministry to negotiate with the textiles companies to reach an agreement with the textile companies on the price.
In an interview with Joy News, an official of Printex Ghana, Mr Moses Zizer, said although the textile companies have complied with a directive to reduce their charges, they are yet to be appraised of government’s next move.
“They said our prices were high, compared to what could be had elsewhere so…they called on us again and we gave a new quotation and later the prices were harmonised…since then we’ve not heard anything from them again,” he hinted.
“We don’t know if we’re going to have the orders, we are not going to have it, or we’re going to have part of it.”
Joy News is yet to contact the Deputy Education Minister on what is being done, but already school uniforms branded Made in China are selling on the market.
