Persons suspected to be opponents of the Ga Mantse, King Tackie Tawiah III, are reported to have broken into the sacred Ga Stool house at Gbese in Accra.
The incident which occurred overnight, follows closely threats on Friday by the Gbese Mantse, Nii Ayibonte II, known in private life as Thomas Okine, to destool King Tackie Tawiah III as Ga Mantse by August. He has put his own chieftain on the line, asking to be destooled if he fails to redeem his vow.
It is unclear what items may have been taken away from the stool house which houses sacred items of the Ga State, but Nii Boye Abbey, spokesperson for the Ga Mantse, told Joy News the incident had been reported to the police and also hinted at a likely civil battle to test whether “the rule of law is just for a few” or for the entire citizenry.
Nii Boye Abbey mentioned some political figures to be linked to the “sacrilegious” invasion and said the complaint to the police received cold shoulders.
Nii Ayibonte, the Gbese Mantse while issuing the threat to enstool a new Ga Mantse, claimed the Ga State had no King and that the situation had adversely affected education and development.
He was addressing a ceremony to lift the traditional ban on drumming and noisemaking as part of the annual Homowo festivities.
