A gender advocate Angela Dwamena Aboagye has mounted a strong argument against a proposal for the creation of a second chamber of parliament for chiefs. The CRC rejected the proposal and instead recommended that bills be referred to the national house of chiefs for their input before parliament passes them into law. But some chiefs have vowed to exploit remaining avenues in the review process for the inclusion of the second chamber so they can directly participate in the governance of the country. Madam Aboagye, however, insists the all male house of chiefs must first accept queen mothers into their fold. Meanwhile, Chairman of the Constitution Review Commission has announced that it has concluded its work. The CRC which was set up in January 2010 by late President Mills in fulfillment of an election pledge has produced a 1000-page report recommending changes to transform the 1992 constitution from what the commission says is a political document to a development-oriented one. On the final day of its existence, its chair, Professor Emeritus Albert Fiadjo chose to make an emotional speech in which he singled out the Executive Secretary, Dr. Raymond Atuguba and his team for special praise. The commission is charging the media to pile pressure on government to quickly honor a promise to establish a five-member committee to oversee implementation of the recommendations as approved by government in its white paper. Information Minister, Fritz Baffour, who was at the final media engagement yesterday, told Joy News government was committed to the process but could not tell when exactly the committee will be constituted.
