Ghana Education Service has begun investigations into how a 17-year-old pupil of the Aboabo Sonkor Junior High School in the Eastern Region was left paralysed after falling from a coconut tree four months ago.

Richard Djangba says he was forced by his teacher popularly called Sir Johnson to pluck coconut for him.

He adds that the teacher threatened to punish him even though he could not climb a tree. 

When attempted to pluck the fruit, he fell from the tree and has since been left paralysed.

Doctors at the Korle BU Teaching Hospital are currently battling to restore his health.

Deputy Director in charge of basic education at the GES, Stephen Adu told Joy News his outfit has taken a serious view of the issue and is investigating it.

 “We have not received any formal complaint but we have seen it and as an education unit we are very much concerned. That is why we have asked the regional director to investigate and let us know the truth of the matter.”  

He said the difficulty was that no formal report had been made and so the education service is unable to know the intensity of the situation but was hopeful that a report will be made in order to ensure that the situation is properly dealt with.

Mr Adu however adds that there is no specific regulation in GES rules concerning the alleged incident.
