Sports analyst Yaw Ampofo-Ankrah suspects persons close to the government are using their connection to witch-hunt either the GFA President or somebody at the football governing body.
“If you look at the track record, recent allegations [of impropriety], the media war, there is quite a pattern that – if it is not [FA President Kwesi] Nyantakyi – then certainly, somebody is after somebody at the FA – if that makes sense at all,” he said.
Does he really believe this? Joy FM’s Super Morning Show host Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah asked, to which Mr Ampofo-Ankrah responded, “Oh yes I do. I mean, some people will not come out openly to say this but I think that there is certainly a vendetta [against somebody at the GFA.]”
Personnel of the Economic and Organised Crimes Unit (formerly Serious Fraud Office), Tuesday raided the offices of the Ghana Football Association and carted away documents and computers in what officials say was part of investigations into the FA’s finances and reports the football governing body breached the country’s laws including tax laws.
The head of the EOCO, Mordey Akpadie, has maintained the action was not targeted at any individual or individuals at the FA but Mr Ampofo-Ankrah disagreed, saying the argument was tenuous and inconsistent with the prevailing happenings.
“I think that it is some individuals who are using government as an excuse to do their dirty work,” Ampofo insisted.
He blamed the GFA for not exposing persons he said were engaged in a power struggle with the football association.
The sports analyst said the disgraceful public spectacle witnessed Tuesday was unnecessary, unwarranted and unjustified.
“Quite clearly, the FA in recent times has been the most successful in terms of getting unprecedented sponsorships for the various national teams – PUMA, Glo, Goldfields, Guinness, the money that comes from Fifa and Caf has also increased” and there should be accountability but the pursuit of accountability must be done with finesse.
Mr Ampofo-Ankrah believes if world football governing body, Fifa, considers the action a substantial interference, it would intervene but “in this instance I don’t think that would happen.”
