The long awaited Ghana All Party Parliamentary Group (GAPPG) at the House of Commons has been given a lifeline following an assurance by two newly elected British-Ghanaian members of Parliament to support its relaunch.

Ghana is among some of the few countries with no such representative group in the UK’s House of Commons to champion cultural, political and economic ties between both countries.

The newly elected female Members of Parliament (MPs) of Ghanaian descent, Bellavia Ribeiro-Addy, Member of Parliament for Streatham and Abena Oppong-Asare, Member of Parliament for Erith and Thamesmead made this assertion on Monday, February 10, during a courtesy call on Ghana’s High Commissioner to UK and Ireland, Papa Owusu-Ankomah, on Monday. 

The High Commissioner on behalf of the Government and people of Ghana, welcomed the two MPs to the High Commission and congratulated them on their election and commended them for lifting the flag of Ghana high. He pointed out that they are indeed, inspiration for the young generation and urged them to bring their longstanding professional expertise as well as community experience to bear on the day to day deliberations at the House of Commons.

He further indicated that he intends bringing together all British-Ghanaian Members of the British Parliament, to discuss how best they could assist in shaping the political discourse back home with their rich experiences garnered in the UK.

The newly elected MPs expressed their appreciation to the High Commissioner for the meeting and indicated that their prime objective for entering into politics is to serve the interests of the people they represent and would not relent on their efforts in ensuring that British Immigration rules are fair to all citizens especially British minorities and Africans.

Present at the meeting were Mrs. Matilda Aku Alomatu Osei-Agyeman, Minister/Head of Chancery, Mrs. Joyce Asamoah-Koranteng, Minister/Commonwealth and Diaspora and Mr. George Ameyaw, the Head of Public Relations of GUBA Enterprise who facilitated the meeting.
