A Labour Economist has called for a national vision to serve as the framework and backbone for all developmental efforts in Ghana.Speaking on Multi TV’s current affairs program, Status Quo, Dr William Baah-Boateng noted that currently Ghana does not have a single national vision to chart a developmental agenda for the country.Dr Baah-Boateng said a country which seeks to develop within a specific period of time should have a national vision. Adding that, until such a national vision is put in place, there will be little or no economic opportunity for Ghanaians in general and the youth in particular.According to him the national vision will be the embodiment of all policies of the various sectors of the economy for all governments to follow.Dr William Baah-Boateng also believes that over the years the various policies initiated in the country have not achieved much result because the leaders were not the originators of those policies.The need for a national vision was re-emphasized by a Social Policy Analyst, Mr. Kukubor who argues that as a nation, Ghana has not been able to conclusively implement national policies largely due to the absence of a national vision.He noted that the absence of a national vision has affected the various strategies and programs to drive and direct our national development efforts. He insisted that the current situation where elected governments use their manifestos as the framework for policy formulation and implementation does not augur well for our nation’s development.According to Mr. Kukubor, most of the political parties are not thinking beyond four or eight years. They only implement programs that will ensure their re-election at the expense of a broader national vision.On how to create economic opportunity for Ghana’s youth, Mr. Kukubor suggested that the way forward is agriculture and other productive sectors like the manufacturing sector.
