The Ghana Water Company has denied suggestions it is supplying contaminated water to consumers in the Asante-Akyem North and South districts of the Ashanti Region. A former employee working under contract was trapped and subsequently died inside one of tanks at the Agyareago Headworks, from where water is pumped to the treatment plant. The body of Kwabena Grushie who was on a routine maintenance mission was retrieved by local divers within hours of the tragedy about five months ago. Residents are raising concerns about the safety of water they are drinking after the incident. Public Relations Officer of Ghana Water Company, Sampson Ampah, however, says the tank was disinfected for two weeks before it was put back to use. He told Nhyira FM that the water company will not compromise on its standards at the expense of consumer health. “The plant had already been shut down because of that impending routine maintenance work and we disinfected that sump for three consecutive days, we were not using it and after the disinfection, we did the flushing and we started using it", he explained. According to him, residents in the Asante-Akyem area should rest assured of their safety. “I can really assure you and the consumers around that when it comes to the quality or the wholesome of the water that they are drinking, its potable, its quality is really okay.” Mr. Ampah said the company cannot be blamed for the tragedy which he described as unfortunate. He said the deceased was given the needed protective gear to ensure his safety in the tank under the supervision of a senior officer. “In fact as far as we are concern, we put in all the necessary safety measures, we put in all the necessary measures that need to be put in place before the incident happened”. According to him, the postmortem report exonerates the Ghana Water Company Limited for any wrong doing. “Even if you check the postmortem report, it has nothing to do with what they are suggesting. We will call it a mere accident. It could happen to everybody”. Story by: Ohemeng Tawiah, Nhyira Fm, Kumasi-Ghana.
