The leadership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has called on Ghanaians to stand together and resist any attempt by the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) to force the nation to return "to the culture of silence."
This comes in the wake of recent criticism of the Judiciary of perceived political bias by Dr Kwabena Adjei, the NDC's National Chairman, and his demand that the Chief Justice purged the Judiciary of corrupt members or it would be done for her.
Addressing a press conference in Kumasi, Mr Jake Otanka Obetsebi-Lamptey, NPP National Chairman, said the conduct of Dr Adjei, represented a crude, naked attempt to coerce and intimidate the judiciary.
"It hits at the heart of the doctrine of separation of powers fundamental to our democracy and puts at risk the rule of law."
Ghana would not be forced back into culture of silence - NPP , flanked by the party's Presidential Candidate, Nana Addo Dankwah Akufo-Addo, some national and regional party executive members, invited all those who wish Ghana well to join in the condemnation of the undisguised move to impose the "will of the Executive on the Judiciary."
He also called on President John Evans Atta Mills to confirm the government's position on the unwarranted assault on the judiciary by the NDC Chairman.
"The people of this country will want to be assured on this matter."
He said "given the recent behaviour of NDC foot soldiers, we hold President Mills and Dr Kwabena Adjei personally responsible for the safety of all judges in Ghana."
Mr Obsetebi-Lamptey vowed that the NPP "will not shirk our responsibility to show leadership to our people in resisting attacks on their basic and inherent freedoms."
