Deputy Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Sammy Awuku says it is important for Ghanaians to know the health status of their president in spite of concerns raised by a section of political divide that it is not a relevant issue.
According to him, if a president of a nation is not well, it can affect his “mental capacity and delivery,” adding that its citizens can suffer hugely from a president’s incapacitation.
In this regard, Sammy Awuku stressed that “Ghanaians must know President Mills’ health Status.”
The issue of the President’s health has come up several times with the latest being at the President’s last media encounter.
A senior reporter had asked a question bothering on the president’s health, seeking to find out if the president has cancer or not as being speculated.
President John Mills in a humorous fashion, brushed the question aside, rather opting to subject himself to a medical examination.
In the words of an NDC organizer, the question on the president’s health was the most stupid question at the media encounter, since according to him, there were other relevant issues that could have been tackled.
However, Sammy Awuku begs to diver.
To him, the moment one puts himself up for the highest office of the land, “you are putting yourself up for the populace to criticize you, praise you, scrutinize you, admonish you and encourage you appropriately and accordingly”, stressing that, “politics is a public venture, if you cannot spell, you don’t write”.
In an interview with X FM, he asserted that the question on the president’s health was the most important question to have been asked.
He stated that, as the number one man in Ghana; and the fact that the president uses the tax payer’s money to take care of his health and other necessities, it was important for Ghanaians to know his health status.
He wondered whether it was an extraordinary thing for someone to ask of the president’s health status since “as mortals as we are, a person can kick the bucket anytime”.
Sammy Awuku was however unsatisfied with President Mills’ response, describing it as “cheeky and arrogant”.
He said President Mills should have used the occasion to burry all speculations on his health once and for all
