Glo Mobile Ghana has officially announced it would launch commercial service on Sunday April 29, 2012 at a press conference. The company has therefore sent out official invites to the media and other special guests for the launch, which comes days after the company was fined some GHS200,000 for failure to launch on Friday, April 20, 2012.This puts to rest rumours that the company had planned to launch on AU Day, May 25, 2012, and also brings the long wait by Ghanaians to an end.Glo had for more than once raised and dashed the hopes of Ghanaians about its commercial launch date, but officials had said time again they were more eager to launch but were restrained by circumstances beyond their control. The Minister of Communications, Haruna Iddrisu admitted that part of the delay of Glo's launch could be blames on regulatory institutions, but that was long over so Glo had no reason, as far as government was concerned, to keep delaying.Glo had a licensing requirement to have covered at least 50% of Ghana with service within two years of its license, which ended August 2011, but had been given more time to start operations.Meanwhile Glo had months ago launched a number reservation campaign under which it reported some 1.87 million Ghanaians had reserved numbers, waiting to activate them on the network.Since coming in country, Glo had invested some $750 millions in installing world-class network equipment, establishing 25 Glo World Call Centres nationwide, hiring some 600 Ghanaians, among other things. The most significant infrastructure Glo brought in country was the Glo One submarine cable, which promised to make the Glo network one of the highest quality in terms of voice and data service. Glo One has since been live in Ghana, but it is still not clear how many customers it is serving. The company is also title sponsor for Ghana’s Premier soccer league in the amount of $3million and also headline sponsor of the senior national team, The Black Stars with another $1.5million.
Glo has also signed several Ghanaians actors and musicians as brand icons and has promised to launch commercially with a series of events that would take this country by storm. For one the musicians on the Glo brand have recorded an album, which Glo Ghana Chief Operating Officer, George Andah said was unprecedented in Ghana’s music industry.
