The president of the Ghana National Union of Polytechnic Students (GNUPS), Mr. Eric Taylor, in collaboration with other national executives of the union, has held a press conference in Accra, to express their grievances over the placements of Higher National Diploma (HND) graduates in the job market, and the current strike action of their teachers across the country.
According to the President, an ill-motivated teacher in the classroom was a virus in knowledge dissemination. "It is in the light of days that the government should intervene with immediate effect on the stand between polytechnic teachers and fair wages and salaries commission," said Mr. Taylor.
He further went on to notify that there was an allegation of ongoing negotiations at the Labour Commission between all stakeholders, to ensure the immediate negotiation for polytechnic teachers to come back to the various lecture halls across the country.
"Must we always get to the situation before government listen to us? What crime has students and the polytechnic committed to suffer this situation? Is it the case of non-committal to the cause of polytechnic education," queried the president of the union.
He also complained about how certain organisations, including those who claim not to belong to the Public Service Commission, were still placing HND graduates in the junior staff category.
In addition to the above, the president went on to establish that this action was against the backdrop of the continuous struggle, over the years, by students and other stakeholders, for the proper placement of HND graduates.
"This is the struggle that led to the issue of the government white paper, directing all organisations, both public and private, to place all HND graduates in the senior staff category, but yet still, certain organisations are refusing to comply with the order," reiterated the President of GNUPS.
