The payment aims to settle outstanding allowances for the 98,145 verified personnel, following a thorough audit process that uncovered a significant gap between the actual number of service personnel and the inflated figures previously submitted for allowance distribution.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, February 12, the government stated its commitment to ensuring that only legitimate personnel receive payment and that all errors in the payroll are rectified.
The GH₵226 million payment will cover the arrears owed to the verified service personnel for their contributions to various national projects and institutions.
"The Ministry of Finance has upon the completion of the head count, released an amount of GHS 226,019,224 covering allowance payment arrears for 98,145 actual National Service personnel," the statement read
According to the latest findings, there are currently 98,145 active service personnel, a stark contrast to the 180,030 names presented for allowance payment in 2024.
The president has thus ordered a probe into the ghost names scandal.
