The government of Ghana has planned to build semi-fishing habours to safeguard canoes and fishing activities of fishermen, the National Chairman of the Ghana National Maritime Canoe Owners Association, Agya Obeng Nyarko, has disclosed on Tuesday.
This followed an interview on a request by the association to parliament to expedite action on a US$3 billion loan agreement with the China Development Bank to revamp the fishing industry in the country.
The fishermen said the loan facility, when approved, will take care of the landing beaches and will make the industry safer and more viable for productivity as well as improve the living standard of fishermen.
According to Agya Obeng Nyarko, fishermen have been neglected for a long time and time is due for them to also part take in the country’s cake.
Speaking to Joy Midday News on the issue, Agya Obeng Nyarko said “most of our landing beaches are in bad state even though there are few of them on which we are operating,” adding, “I think our canoes will be safer at the semi-habours when they are being constructed.”
The association said parliament’s failure to aprove the loan will due a heavy blow on the fishing industry.
Richard Kojo Nyarko, Joy News correspondent, said the loan facility has a component that is expected to improve the fishing industry by the building of landing beaches and other important things that will make the fishing industry a productive one.
According to the Ghana National Maritime Canoe Owners Association, the fishing industry is faced with many challenges that should be the concern of all and, thus, the earlier parliament approves the loan facility, the better it would be for the fishing industry.
