The President of the Sports Writers Association of Ghana, Ackah Anthony says the government must work to ensure the passing of the Sports bill into law before December 14 to avoid another ban from the IOC.
As part of a roadmap to solving the Ghana Olympic Committee’s power struggles problem, the IOC gave three directives which include elections of leaders for all sporting associations. Those requirements have since been complied with.
But the international body recently introduced another requirement, which is the passing of the sports law.
This move by the IOC has incurred the displeasure of the Youth and Sports Ministry which has now called the bluff of the international body.
The Ministry’s stand is backed by the Association of Presidents of Sports Associations led by Dr Michael Nunoo.
“The IOC is shifting the goalposts and that is grossly unfair and it’s against the ideals of the Olympic movement which has fair play as one of its basic principles.”
He said the passage of the Sports Law by December 14 as demanded by the IOC was never one of the conditions set by the Committee.
“It is only after the three conditions were met that a new condition has been introduced [but] you cannot have this thrown in at the eleventh hour when it is almost impossible to meet that condition,” he stated.
