Energy Minister Dr. Joe Oteng-Agyei says ongoing investigations into how Kosmos acquired a stake in the Jubilee Oil Field should not affect negotiations by government to buy them out. The Attorney General and the FBI are said to be investigating the acquisition. Kosmos, together with the EO Group, Tullow Oil and others jointly own that part of the Jubilee Oil Field presently being drilled for crude oil. Kosmos had indicated that it reached an agreement to sell its 23.5 percent shares to ExxonMobil sometime last year, but government insists it wants to exercise its first right to buy and is still negotiating. Dr. Oteng-Adjei tells Joy Business government would in any case not relax the rules simply because it could jeopardize negotiations. “If Kosmos has broken any one of the laws of this country, why should we spare them just because they want to sell and go. If you and I commit the same thing in their country, they would ask us to go through the process,” he said. “Let us have confidence and assurance in our own processes that it would not hurt anybody who’s not done wrong.” He justified government’s decision to investigate the transaction, saying the FBI had started its own investigations long before the Mills administration decided to take action. The Attorney General would not deny or confirm that all the 25 charges listed on the supposed leaked charge sheet that has been published are indeed going to be filed against the EO Group, but she confirmed they were works in progress from her office.
