Government is offloading first batch of medical supplies to restock the country’s drugs after the Central Medical Store was razed down by fire last month.
Health Minister Dr. Kwaku Agyemang Mensah told Luv News container loads of drugs have started to be offloaded on Monday at the country’s ports.
He also commended donor agencies for responding positively to requests for further assistance.
He said as a result of a letter sent to the West Africa Health Organisation, Ghana would be getting some drug supplies from neighbouring Ivory Coast.
In addition, the Health Minister said UNICEF is also assisting the country to get vaccines from Burkina Faso and Nigeria to ensure that Ghana’s vaccination programmes are not interrupted.
So far, Ghana has taken delivery of 29 40-footer containers full of drugs from its donors.
In another development, the Minister inspected the extent of work on the age-old maternity block at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi.
He is hopeful the block would be completed by 2016 to ease congestion at the hospital.
As a former board chairman of the hospital, he said he is keen about ensuring that the hospital gets its fair share of the national cake.
Dr. Kwaku Agyemang Mensah said one of two proposals sent to the Finance Ministry for support has been cleared.
He is hopeful the proposal would subsequently be cleared by both Cabinet and Parliament respectively.
