Government is set to create 30,000 jobs for dozens of unemployed youth in the country next year under the National Forest Plantation Programme. This was disclosed by the Deputy Minister of Lands and Forestry, Henry Ford Kamel on the floor of parliament on Monday. According to him, 300 people will be employed from each district, and will cover over 100 districts across the country. “In each of these districts we are going to ensure that we take 300 people who will be in charge of normal agricultural and management practices like preparations of beds, preparations of nurseries, pegging, planting and weeding,” he told Joy News’ Sammy Darko in an interview after parliamentary proceedings. The programme is expected to expand in 2011 and will recruit close to 51,000 youth in the country. He gave the assurance that government has made thorough provision for prompt payment of salaries to the youth. According to him, his outfit has concluded comprehensive discussions with the Ministry of Local Government to allot to the programme part of the common fund as well as the natural resource and environmental governance for funding arrangements. He said the programme will be “enjoyable” one as implementers agree to combine work with fun. It is going to an enjoyable programme because its not going to simply work all the times. We are going to structure it in such a way that while working there will be songs time for jokes,” He also underscored the sustainability of the programme saying it will last a life time.
