The consultant in charge of the sea defence project at Akplorwotokor in the Keta Municipality in the Volta region, Godfred Quarcoo said there is the need for government to commit more resources by constructing additional sea defense along the entire coast line, from Akplorwotokor to Aflao.
This he observed will protect the coastal area from total destruction as a result of the continues activities of high tidal waves in the area.
Mr Quarcoo was speaking to the Volta Regional Minister, Hon Ford Kamel, when he led a team of government officials including the Deputy Minister responsible for transport, Dzifa Ativor and the Deputy Minister of Agric in charge of fisheries, Nii Amassah Namoale and Engineers from the Ministry of Water resources, Works and Housing to the project site.
The consultant observed that even though the project is not yet complete, it is already having positive impact on the people.
He said they are now reclaiming the land but the challenge is that whenever they stop at a point, the sea starts to eat into the land.
“It means something must done about it. Wherever you stop, the effect of erosion starts vigorously over there,” he said.
On his part, the Volta Regional Minister Hon. Ford Kamel congratulated the contractors on the project and urged them to expedite action on the project in order to protect lives and properties at Atorkor, Dzita and surrounding villages.
He was happy phase one of the project had been completed with the second phase underway.
The first phase cost about $34 million and the second phase is about $11 million. This is quite a huge chunk of resources. But it is definitely worth it,” he said.
He is optimistic the project will bring relief to the people.
