GPL: Five talking points matchday 12

Hearts of Oak lost 1-0 to Medeama, Kotoko claimed all three points against struggling Inter Allies and Legon Cities held Karela a goalless draw.

Here are the five talking points from matchday 12.

Dreams FC have turned things around

At the start of the campaign, little went right for Dreams FC. The Still Believe boys had won just one of their first seven games and were strong candidates for relegation.

Changes needed to be made and the club made the right one with the appointment of Vladislav Viric.

Since Viric's arrival, Dreams have been unbeaten in 2021 (W3 D2) and are suddenly in contention for a top-four spot.

It will be interesting to see if they will be able to keep this form going.

Great Olympics could go all the way

After 15 games in the truncated season, Great Olympics amassed 20 points. This season, they have earned one more after 12 matchdays.

It is really a remarkable turnaround for the Ole Dade boys and they have shown little signs of stopping.

Great Olympics have the joint best away record in the division (10 points) which is an impressive feat considering the difficulty in gaining points away from home.

They possess Gladson Awako, one of the very best the competition has to offer and have shown improvement in all areas.

The Accra-based side should be considered a threat for the ultimate, a trophy they have not won since 1974.

Inter Allies' away form a worrying sight

14 away wins have been recorded after matchday 12. This signifies how difficult it is to get an away win.

But, in Inter Allies' case, it is more than difficult. The Capella boys have lost all six away games this season.

They are the only team in the competition with that unfortunate record. Scoring goals have also been a problem in their travels, netting just one whilst conceding seven.

Being 18th on the league table with seven points is a fair reflection of Inter Allies' season.

The season is still young. However, the Accra-based side are not doing themselves any favors and could be looking at relegation.

Kotoko have to do more to earn the favorites tag

Looking at the current top three on the league table, one team's goal tally looks odd.

Kotoko have scored just 10 goals in 12 league games (0.83 goals per game) and have conceded six (0.5 goals per game).

They have scored at least six fewer goals than Great Olympics and Karela United, the top two teams in the country.

It is shocking to note that only Inter Allies and Liberty Professionals have scored less than the Porcupine Warriors. What is more shocking is that those two teams are in the relegation zone.

Scoring fewer goals to win games will not work in every situation. To maintain their tag as title favourites, Kotoko should find ways to score more goals.

Are Hearts of Oak losing their touch?

After losing 2-0 to Great Olympics in the Mantse derby last weekend, it was expected that Hearts of Oak will make a statement this matchday.

Unfortunately, they recorded a 1-0 defeat against Medeama which means they have lost back-to-back games for the first time this season.

Granted, Medeama have improved recently but considering the good results they had before matchday 11, a loss do the Phobians little favors.

They have now failed to score a goal in any of their last three games, a worrying statistic for Kosta Papic.

Two weeks ago, they had the opportunity to go top of the table. Now, they have dropped to the bottom half (10th).

There is still time to change the narrative. Before then, the Accra-based side will be in the spotlight for the wrong reasons.
