The 2017/18 Ghana Premier League season finally got underway this weekend with Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak failing to make winning starts.
WAFA 1-1 Asante Kotoko
Asante Kotoko fought back to earn a creditable draw against WAFA in Sogakope. The Porcupine Warriors made a poor start as the conceded in the second minute but recovered to secure a point. Former U-17 star Aminu Mohammed drilled a freekick to the bottom right corner for the first goal however, Kotoko equalised totally against the run of play on 19 minutes. Both sides huffed and puffed but none could find the winning goal. It is the first time that Kotoko have scored a goal and picked a point at WAFA in three seasons.
Eleven Wonders 1-1 Hearts of Oak
Debutants Eleven Wonders made an encouraging start to their topflight campaign by recovering from a goal down to earn a draw against giants Hearts of Oak in Techiman. Winful Cobbinah converted from the spot to give the Phobians an early lead. Buoyed by the goal, Hearts created decent chances but they failed to convert as Wonders grew into the game and it was just a matter of when the home side would get the deserved equaliser. The goal arrived in the 56th minute from no other than their star man and proven league scorer Alex Asamoah. The former Kotoko attacker left unmarked in the box poked home from close range.
Inter Allies 3-0 Bechem United
Nigerien midfielder Victorien Adebayor scored twice on his Ghana Premier League debut for Inter Allies as they embarrassed Bechem United on Saturday afternoon at the Tema Park. Kenichi Yatsuhashi's team were a constant threat against a poor Hunters side, offering excitement and encouragement to their supporters.
Medeama 1-0 Karela United
An 8th-minute strike from Kwame Boateng secured a vital 1-0 win for Medeama against Premier League new boys Karela United. The former Kotoko striker rattled the back of the net after connecting beautifully from Agyenim Boateng’s sleek pass. Karela United were the better side on the day but lack of killer instinct denied them at least a point at the Tarkwa and Aboso Park.
AshantiGold 1-0 WA All Stars
AshantiGold SC handed their new owners a perfect start when they recorded a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Wa All Stars. A 17th minute strike by striker Shafiu Mumuni was all the Miners needed to claim the full spoils. Dreams FC 1-0 Elmina Sharks A last-gasp goal by Sharani Zubeiru helped Dreams FC make a winning start at home. Sharks thought they had secured a point when Zubeiru scored the only goal in the 93rd minute to hand Dreams FC their first three points on the return to the elite division.
Ebusua Dwarfs 1-0 Berekum Chelsea
Dwarfs capitalised on home court and inflicted a narrow defeat on Berekum Chelsea at Cape Coast. The home side broke the deadlock in the second half through Amoah Mensah. He held his nerve to score a penalty which was enough for Dwarfs.
