Workers of Ghana Grid Company, GRIDCO, in Takoradi and across the country, have started wearing red arm bands in protest over stalled salary adjustments.The bands have also been tied to some of the company’s assets including vehicles.According to Maxx Business sources, the review of workers’ salaries which occurs every two years has not been done since last year.The workers say although there have been several meetings to negotiate the increases; an agreement has not been reached because management is rejecting their demand.The workers would not say the percentage increase they are demanding.There has been an unstable power supply in the past months, forcing intermittent blackouts, and this could worsen, as staff of the power transmitter continue to agitate.A worker who pleaded anonymity told Maxx News, ‘workers are agitated to the extent that, there are plans to sabotage the power transmission system if the matter is not resolved in the shortest possible time’.Some of the workers are more agitated because workers of Volta River Authority (VRA) and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) have had their salaries already reviewed. Some of the workers are also demanding the removal of the company’s Human Resource Director, Wind Commander Allotey, whom they accuse of frustrating the salary negotiation process.They have also accused him of incompetence, and have vowed to go beyond the wearing of red arm bands if their demands are not met.When contacted by Maxx News, the Takoradi Area Manager of GRIDCO, George Impraim, did not confirm or deny the report, except to say that he was not present at the company to speak to the issue.GRIDCO is currently without a substantive head, as its former CEO, Charles Darko, has moved to Tullow Oil as the first Ghanaian General Manager for the oil firm. A Board member is currently acting as the CEO.
