A pressure group, Forum for Public Accountability, is accusing deputy Works and Housing Minister Dr. Hannah Bissew of stinking corruption. At a press conference in Accra, Wednesday, the group among a litany of accusations cited a multi-million mansion said to have been built by the Deputy Housing Minister in her hometown. According to the spokesperson of the group, Daniel Ofori Marfo, the deputy Minister has admitted, grudgingly, that she put up such a mansion except that she took a government loan to construct it. He told newsmen that Ghanaians have a right to know how much loan was taken, the interest rate, the guarantor and the repayment terms. Citing a Ghanaian Times newspaper report, Marfo further stated the deputy minister in her personal capacity funded a GHS140,000 school block for the Presbyterian Senior High School and a dormitory block, an amount he claims is outrageous for a public official to cough up on her own for a project. “Again on Thursday 20th January 2011, Dr. Bissiw cut the sod for the building of a one billion cedi office complex for the Tano South Constituency of the National Democratic Congress. She admitted paying from her own resources. “The deputy minister receives a per diem of 800.00 cedis per week instead of the rightful amount of 200.00 cedis per week. “…It is sad to say that in the face of all these, Dr Bissiw continues to hold office and perpetrate fraud on the people of Ghana. “Dr Louisa Hannah Bissiw is not fit for public office. She is an embarrassment to nation and government. “She is a test case of corruption,” Marfo stated, daring the minister to go to court to clear her name. He stated further that they will in the coming weeks expose several other ministers who are building mansions, just two years in government. Marfo called on the president, John Mills to give concrete expression to his fight against corruption by first asking the deputy minister to step aside whilst investigation is conducted into the allegations of corruption leveled against her. The group has already dragged the deputy Minister to the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice and is awaiting a verdict.
