A group calling itself “Alliance for the Survival of Obuasi” is threatening industrial chaos in the town if mining giant, Anglogold Ashanti goes ahead to abrogate what they say is a longstanding contract with a local company.
The company, Mining and Building Contractors (MBC)is said to have been involved in the development of mining fields for AngloGold since 1921.
The group however says it has learnt of recent moves by AngloGold to sever the relationship with MBC.
The “Alliance for the Survival of Obuasi” says such a move would ruin the economy of the mining town because MBC is one of the biggest employers in Obuasi, with 1,300 workers; second only to AngloGold.
An Assemblyman in the area, Edward Kwasi Akuoko who doubles as spokesperson for the group tells Joy Business the mining giant has been particularly unfair in its dealings with MBC because it got the company to fulfill certain obligations in anticipation of a renewal of the contract.
Officials of AngloGold say they will respond to the concerns raised by the group in due time.
A former Presidential Advisor, Mr. P.V. Obeng who is said to be part of the management of the local services company is unavailable for comment.
