Associate Professor at the School of Law, University of Ghana, Professor Appiagyei-Atua has advised the military junta in Guinea to restore constitutional order in the country.

According to him, the military has served its purpose by ensuring that a government which has tampered with the laws of country to stay in power and is unwanted by the people, is overthrown.

Speaking with Samson Lardy Anyenini on JoyNews Newsfile, he noted that the military, whose intervention was needed, will be applauded by the people for exiting to allow democratic governance.

“The role of the military in politics is to be on the side of the masses, to change government, where it has become impossible to change government through the ballot box or the agreed formula in the constitution of the particular country.

“So after the dictatorship is overthrown, they leave the scene and allow democracy to return and they should have indicated to the people that this is what they were going to do. But as things stand, I think the military has finished its job. Any attempt for them to remain in power and to say that they are ensuring corruption is ruled out and so on, is not their job. They should prepare the ground and leave the scene," he said on Saturday.

His comments come to support demands by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) for constitutional order in Guinea.

ECOWAS has issued a 6-month ultimatum for the military to give up power as well as release President Alpha Conde who has been detained since September 5, after the coup.

Unlike many who have opposed the military takeover, Professor Appiagyei-Atua is of the view that the Guinea coup was needed to rectify the bad governance in the country.

“During the time of Conde, he reengineered the constitution, doctored it and introduced a third term, which led to some serious human rights violations taking place, and he going ahead to put in prison some politicians. Clearly, it indicated that there was no other way for democratic change to occur in the country and so in my opinion, the military did a right thing by ensuring the overthrow of the regime," he noted.

Currently, Chairman of ECOWAS President Akufo-Addo is in Guinea dialoguing with the military led by Colonel Mamady Doumbouya on the fate of the country.
