Ghana striker Asamoah Gyan hailed an “important point” after he netted Sunderland’s equaliser at White Hart Lane. Gyan engineered a quick response to Rafael Van der Vaart’s opener when he fired home just two minutes after Tottenham had taken the lead. It was the Ghanaian star’s fifth goal in 10 appearances for Sunderland and he admitted a second-half revival was crucial after manager Steve Bruce vented his spleen at half time. “Tottenham dominated the first half and the manager was not happy at all,” he said. “We had to come back out and make sure we came back into the game. I thought we did that quite well and played some good football. “Fortunately we were able to get a goal. This point is very important for us.” Gyan profited from a defensive error as both Younes Kaboul and William Gallas missed the ball as Danny Welbeck attempted to force his way through. The Sunderland striker was quick to cash in, beating Heurelho Gomes with a low finish. And Gyan admitted the chance took him by surprise as he never expected the ball to fall to him. “I was very surprised. It was quite lucky. The defender was in front of me, he miskicked and then the ball was in front of the goal. “I had to punish them for that mistake. I was a bit lucky there.” Meanwhile Gyan felt the introduction of Danny Welbeck made a difference after the on-loan Manchester United frontman came on as a substitute at half time. Manager Bruce changed his system to 4-4-2, partnering the two up front after Gyan ploughed a lone furrow in the first half. “Danny made a difference because I was alone with big guys at the back,” he said. “The coach changed the strategy and I think Danny changed the game a lot.” Gyan will now head into Sunday’s clash with Chelsea full of confidence following a successful start to his Sunderland career. And he admits he’s enjoying his football on Wearside after moving from Rennes on the final day of the summer transfer window. “Scoring goals is the most important thing.
