The Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has expressed appreciation for the outpouring of public support for the newly launched Ghana Medical Trust Fund (MahamaCares), citing unexpected donations from individuals, including a generous contribution from a pensioner.
This comes after President John Dramani Mahama announced that he is leading by example by giving up half of his annual salary to support healthcare in Ghana through the Ghana Medical Trust Fund.
The move aims to bolster medical services and improve access to quality healthcare for patients battling chronic and life-threatening illnesses.

Speaking on Asempa FM's Ekosiisen programme on Tuesday, April 29, Mr Akandoh shared a particularly moving moment.
“I was surprised that some people offered to voluntarily donate money to the initiative. I can recall a pensioner, Prof Ayittey, generously contributing a substantial amount of 1,000 dollars to support the cause,” he shared.
He highlighted the inspiring response as evidence of the wide-reaching impact and public goodwill surrounding the fund, which was unveiled by former President John Mahama to support specialist treatment for chronic diseases such as cancer, diabetes, and kidney failure.
In a further show of solidarity, Mr Akandoh announced his personal commitment to the cause.
“Since the President has pledged to donate his six months’ salary to support the initiative, I am also donating three months’ salary to the fund,” he said.
He added that fellow ministers have also pledged their support. “Other ministers, such as Ofosu Agyare, Naa Momo Lartey, and others, have pledged to contribute one month’s salary in support.”
