The shedding of dead skin cells from the scalp is not to be confused with a simple dry scalp, researchers say.
It is very normal for a small amount of dead skin cells to be flaking from the scalp especially when combing the hair, but some people experience an unusual large amount of flaking which may be accompanied by redness and irritation- this is dandruff.
Dandruff is a common scalp disorder affecting almost half of the population at the post-pubertal age and of any sex and ethnicity. It often causes itching. It has been well established that keratinocytes play a key role in the expression and generation of immunological reactions during dandruff formation - wikipedia.org.
Researchers say most affected persons find it as one of the causes of social or self-esteem problems. However, Dr. Sharib Azmi of the Care First Elfare Association has outlined some simple healthy tips that can be followed for a dandruff free hair.
Health tips for dandruff treatment
> Massage the hair with heated coconut oil or olive oil. Then apply lemon juice. After half-an-hour, wash with a baby shampoo. Repeat this twice a week till the dandruff gets completely reduced.
> Keep your hair brush, towel and comb clean, wash with disinfectants once a week.
> Fenugreek seeds are also effective in reducing dandruff. Soften them in water and apply to the scalp every morning. After an hour or so, wash with soap nut. This will keep dandruff away and prevents falling hair.
> Boil a handful of neem leaves in 4 teacups of water. After cooling and filtering, use for rinsing hair.
