China's Huawei Technologies has completed refurbishment works on parts of the Accra Central Library.
The Chinese company renovated the reference and lending room and renovated the ICT room, all at a total cost of $129,000 dollars, to enable it to render optimal services to its patrons.
The rehabilitation work also covered painting, replacement of furniture, re-tiling and ceiling replacements, laying of cables and the installation of networking equipment and air conditioners.
The ICT center which hitherto had only one computer was also equipped with 30 new desktop computers and accessories.
Speaking at a ceremony to hand over the facility, the Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, Sun Baohong, said Huawei is one of the many Chinese companies that have made remarkable contributions to Ghana's economic development, social progress and the improvement of people's livelihood.
She said Chinese enterprises carry out extensive mutual beneficial cooperation with Ghana, employing a great number of local people, embarking on technology transfer and human resources development and feedback the society in an earnest way.
The Managing Director of Huawei Ghana, Russel Xu, promised that his outfit would continue the long-term collaboration with the Ghana Library Authority to promote the development of the library for the general public.
"In 2015, we will renovate other sections including the children’s reading room and bring more books, especially about China and ICT," he said.
Edward Omane Boamah, Ghana's Minister of Communications Edward Omane Boamah, commended Huawei for the gesture and asked other corporate bodies to emulate the Huawei example.
"There is a lot that government is doing. Government is investing in ICT and telecommunications, Huawei is benefiting from the government of Ghana. So I think it is good Huawei is reciprocating by providing this excellent facility."
The Executive Director of the Ghana Library Authority Kwaku Tenkorang Ofosu thanked Huawei Technologies for coming to the aid of the Central library and assured the company that they would take good care of the facilities.
The Chinese ambassador also donated books to the Ghana library authority.
Huawei, a leading global ICT solutions provider, has provided ICT Solutions for the government of Ghana, including an Integrated National Security Communication System Project and a Comprehensive e-government Platform Project since its inception in 2005.
