The Institute of Economic Affairs is accusing the two leading political parties for violating sections of the political party code of conduct they both signed to and promised to respect.
The governing National Democratic Congress and the opposition New Patriotic Party have both scheduled August 25 for their campaign launch.
As if that is not mysterious enough, both parties are claiming ownership of the same slogan- “People Matter, You Matter.”
The IEA which spearheaded the drafting of the political party code of conduct said the two parties are violating the section of the code that deals with the rules of campaigning.
A researcher with the governance unit of the IEA and lecturer at the University of Ghana, Ransford Gyampo told Joy News Article 12 of the 2012 Political party code of conduct enjoins parties not to plagiarize or use symbols and paraphernalia of other political parties. It thus appear in this case that one of the two parties has breached the code.
Article 6 of the same section on campaigning, he noted, also enjoins parties not to hold events of such magnitude the same day.
Ransford Gyampo said the IEA cannot immediately say which of the two parties is culpable for breaching the code, hinting his outfit will conduct an investigation into the matter.
He said the parties will be made to dialogue to see if there can be mutation of the slogans and the launch date in order not to confuse the electorates.
In the event that both parties insist on using the same slogan and have the launch the same day, Ransford Gyampo said the IEA will have no choice but to name and shame the parties involved.
Whilst agreeing that naming and shaming will not be deterrent enough, he was quick to add that there are a number of floating voters who will act accordingly and punish political parties who violate the codes they themselves have signed on to.
