A legal practitioner with the governing National Democratic Congress says a prediction by London-based Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) that the New Patriotic Party will win the December polls will not materialize.

Abraham Amaliba says the NDC is confident of a victory in the December polls and no prediction will sway the electorate to vote for the NPP.

Speaking on Joy News’ Am Show on Multi TV, the member of the NDC’s legal team said his party is poised for victory and that the EIU prediction is “just a prediction. In 2008 same predictions were made but the NDC won.”

The EIU has predicted a win for the opposition NPP in the December polls. The EIU, which earlier this year predicted a close margin win for the NPP indicated that although both the presidential and legislative elections will be hostile, the NPP will be declared victorious.

“We expect Nana Akufo-Addo and the NPP to be victorious at the December presidential and legislative elections, given popular frustration with Ghana’s poor economic performance under the recent NDC administration,” the London-based EIU of the Economist Magazine predicted in its October edition.

The EIU said: "Pre-election spending in 2016 will put pressure on the fiscal deficit target set in conjunction with the IMF, although the government will be more successful at resisting large-scale populist spending than in previous election years."

In Amaliba’s view, there is no way the electorates will vote out the NDC because it has delivered on all its manifesto promises.

“For the first time in a long while, some communities have had schools built in their back yard. So the people can see for themselves who is competent and is managing the economy to the glory of God,” Amaliba said.

He rubbished claims by the NPP that government is sinking the country in debt due to its excessive borrowing.

He said the Mahama-led administration is investing in infrastructure projects. These projects, he believes, will in the long run provide relief for Ghanaians.

“I see investments not debts, the extension of Tema and Takoradi ports, expansion of the Ridge Hospital are investments because they outlive us for the next 50 years.”

“The NPP are nation wreckers, they don’t want Ghana to develop. When you are building interchanges and hospitals, they are saying it is debts,” he said.

Amaliba called on the president to borrow for more infrastructure developments if he can and ignore the NPP because “when this country is developing and making strides, they are always against it.”

Member of Parliament for Ayawaso West Wuogon, Kyerematen Agyarko who also contributed to the discussion said the EIU prediction, although encouraging does not mean the job is done.

He said the NPP is focused on the ground works which will bring in the votes and that “it is comforting but it has not gone into our heads.”

“We are determined to salvage this country from the mismanagement and incompetence that has bedeviled it in the last eight years,” he added.

He said the NPP wants to be sure that every Ghanaian is given the opportunity to vote once, have the votes counted and recorded and until that is done, “it is not over.”
