An attempt by a 26-year-old woman to allegedly blackmail her boyfriend, a former Member of Parliament (MP) on Friday, ended in bizarre circumstances in her home at East Legon, Accra.
Neteley Nettey Yirenkyiwaa, a clothes designer, is said to have secured the services of two men “to put fear into her boyfriend, Mr. Joseph Adu (Alias J.B. Dankwa) also an industrialist, to be more generous to her than he was previously. There was a scuffle between the ex-MP and the men in Ms Yirenkyiwaa’s room resulting in the ex-MP’s palm being slashed with a knife.
He is reported to be on admission at the surgical ward of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital. Legon District Police Commander, Matthew Teye Tetteh, told the Times newspaper yesterday that about 9:30pm on Friday, Ms. Yirenkyiwaa invited Mr. Adu to her apartment at American House, East Legon, for a private discussion. Unknown to the ex-MP, Ms Yirenkyiwaa had invited the two men, Charles Antwi, 23, and Nana Yaw, both unemployed, to lay ambush at the house to attack the ex-MP. ASP Tetteh said whilst Ms. Yirenkyiwaa and Mr. Adu were in her room, the two men armed with knives forcibly entered and started snapping pictures of them. He said in an attempt by the ex-MP to collect the camera from the men, they slashed his palm with the two sharp knives.
Mr. Adu raised the alarm which attracted other residents and a police patrol team succeeded in arresting Yirenkyiwaa and Antwi, but Nana Yaw escaped.
ASP Tetteh said during a search of the woman’s room, the two blood-stained knives, a camera, skipping rope, cello tape, bed sheet soaked with blood, Mr. Adu’s blood-soaked dress and a pair of shoes and car keys were found. He said the police suspected the men had attempted to tape and tie Mr. Adu before causing harm to him.
ASP Tetteh said Antwi told the police during interrogation that they were invited by Yirenkyiwaa to put fear in the MP so that he (the MP) would give her money as he used to do, claiming that the MP was no longer taking good care of her. He said Yirenkyiwaa, also confessed that she was in a relationship with Mr. Adu but he had started ‘cheating’ on her, and admitted engaging the two youngmen. Yirenkyiwaa and Antwi are in police custody assisting in interrogations.
