The Commissioner of Customs of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), Major General BK Onwona, has affirmed his outfit's commitment to investigating criminal activities at the country’s borders.
This follows a recent exposé in a JoyNews documentary titled "Porous Borders."
The documentary brings to light the high occurrence of bribery involving customs officials and traders to enable the latter to evade taxes.
Responding to concerns at the Public Accounts Committee, he said that although the video revealed some truth, those involved in the activities could not be identified.
He however said he would apply technical know-how to bring the offenders to book.
“Based on the face value of what we see, a full investigation will be conducted and I mean a full investigation.
“Interestingly, this is where I spent all my years in, so it is not going to be a doubt. I have some know-how. Let me say for now, that if people are wrong indeed they will be dealt with.
“I have not seen the video completely. This is just a synopsis and usually when you are doing documentary coverage and you don’t do it very well, the evidence should be clear. You shouldn’t have the slightest doubt," he said on July 29.
Meanwhile, he said the Customs Division is set to begin geo-spatial intelligence training for customs officials, assigned by the Japanese International Cooperation Agency.
“When you have a geospatial intelligence collection approach, what it means is that you have some level of border protection and you are able to identify hot spots of smuggling, you are able to have the route of smugglers. It gives you inter-agency cooperation in terms of intelligence. Indeed this system is coming in place in September God willing,” he said.
