Parliament's Privileges Committee has set July 3 for a public hearing of a case of contempt brought against Assin Central legislator by the Minority Chief Whip, Muntaka Mubarak.

Kennedy Agyapong who stands accused of calling parliament a useless institution will be cross-examined by his accuser on the day of the hearing. 

According to Chair of the Committee, Joseph Osei Owusu no one will be allowed to make any allegation behind their colleagues 'so the witness and contemnor will be here.'

'If he [contemnor] chooses not to come, that is another matter,' he added stating Mr Agyapong will be duly informed. 

Mr Agyapong has been hauled before the Privileges Committee of Parliament over comments some MPs say were insulting to the House.

He has since backtracked on his earlier comment, insisting he never insulted parliament. However, he launched a fresh verbal assault on Minority chief whip, Muntaka Mubarak for raising the issue on the floor.  

Mr Mubarak moved a motion on the floor earlier this month demanding that Kennedy Agyapong be dragged before the Privileges Committee to answer for his insulting comments 

He accused Kennedy Agyapong of calling Parliament useless for electing Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu as a leader of the house.

On Tuesday, Muntaka Mubarak presented his evidence and made a case why the committee should apply the appropriate sanctions against his colleague on the majority side.

He told Joy News he sent all evidence he had to substantiate his claim including a video recording.

‘I have done my part, they asked me questions which I have answered…I am done, it is for the committee to determine that what I have put before them and what they have seen amounts to what I described on the floor as being contemptuous,' he said. 

Muntaka is optimistic that considering the unapologetic reaction and conduct of Mr Agyapong shortly after he lodged the initial complaint, the committee will open up the issue for a public discussion.’

‘I hope this paves the way for an investigation,’ he said.

According to Muntaka, claims by Mr Agyapong that he said parliament is cheap and not useless does not make any difference, ‘because if you say something is cheap then it is not really useful’.

The Minority Chief Whip said Mr Agyapong’s choice of words in describing the Majority Leader and his colleagues leaves much to be desired as a parliamentarian.

‘The issue about him calling me dumb is about my person so I don’t want to draw my person into this,’ he said.
