Words of condolences are pouring in hours after the death of Ghana’s president, Prof. John Atta Mills was announced.
UK Prime Minister David Cameron said:
"I was deeply saddened to hear about the death of President Mills earlier today. President Mills was a tireless defender of democracy in West Africa and across the continent, and he will be greatly missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife and family, and all the Ghanaian people on this difficult day."
Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan stated:
“I received with shock and immense sadness news of the sudden death of President John Atta Mills of Ghana.”
Mr Jonathan “extends sincere condolences to late President Mill’s family as well as the government and people of Ghana.
“The President assures the people of Ghana of the sympathy and solidarity of the people of Nigeria as they mourn late President Mills who did his best during his tenure to carry forward the process of democratic consolidation and socio-economic development in Ghana.”
"The excellent relationship which existed between Nigeria and Ghana during President Mill’s tenure will continue to be strengthened under the new leadership in Ghana in the mutual interest of both countries.”
“It is with a heavy heart that we announce the sudden and untimely death of the president of the Republic of Ghana,” the statement said.
NPP flag-bearer Nana Akufo-Addo in a statement said:
"Whilst on a campaign tour of the Evalue Gwira constituency in the Western Region this afternoon, I heard the sad news of the death of the President of the Republic, H E Prof John Evans Atta Mills.
"I have decided to suspend immediately the rest of my campaign tour until further notice.
"I express my condolences to the First Lady, Madam Naadu Mills and the rest of the family.
"I extend my condolences to the government and people of Ghana on the death of the President, and also to the National Democratic Congress party on the loss of their leader.
"I call on all Ghanaians to stand united in this moment of national loss and grief.
"I pray to the Almighty that He gives his soul a peaceful place of abode.
"May he rest in peace."
