Aide to ex-President John Rawlings says his boss must be accorded the respect he duly deserves at all times and not only when it is time for elections.
Kofi Adams told Joy News’ Dzifa Bampoh that Rawlings is “no election machine” to be remembered only when it is time for elections and treated with disdain after elections.
He was responding to an ultimatum issued by the NDC Member of Parliament for Shai Osu-Doku to the national executives of the NDC demanding that they begin unity talks between Mr. Rawlings and President Mills.
David Tetteh Asumeng in an interview said the NDC can not afford to go into election 2012 with a divided front, swearing, if the NDC executives fail to unite the two power brokers in the party on or before 31 December, 2011 they will be forced out of office.
His threats have provoked angry responses from both the national executives and the Rawlingses.
The General Secretary of the NDC, Johnson Asiedu Nketia said the MP has no right to be issuing threats to the national executives.
He said the ultimatum issued by the Asumeng betrayed his ignorance on the party’s constitution.
Whilst Kofi Adams believes the MP had the right to call for unity, he said for him to premise such a call on the need to get Mr Rawlings back on the campaign train is untenable.
“Mr Rawlings is not an election machine,” he snapped.
He said Mr. Rawlings is deserving of the party’s respect at all times, not only when election is beckoning.
He would not comment on Johnson Asiedu’s remarks that Mr. Rawlings has not also helped in the unity talks.
