The Volta Regional Minister, Kofi Dzamesi has accused some NDC Members of Parliament, chiefs and traditional priests in the region of plotting to disrupt the deworming exercise.
The exercise was disrupted on Monday after some children on whom the drug was administered fell ill.
Reports of the isolated cases spread through the entire region prompting disruption to the exercise.
Addressing journalists today Mr. Dzamesi said he received information that a meeting was held in Keta on Sunday to plot the destruction of the exercise.
“Information reaching me indicate that on Sunday 11th of February 2007, some NDC people, including some MPs, and chiefs and fetish priests had gathered at Keta and it was at that place that the NDC people swore that they were going to destroy the Volta Region.
“They decided to adopt lies, intimidation and cheap propaganda to destroy the peaceful atmosphere that the Volta Region enjoys today. So on Monday that is yesterday they gave money to some boys who boarded vehicles from Keta, to Aflao, to Ho and in the vehicle they started telling people that His Excellency President Kufuor had bought some poisoned drugs to be given to children in the Volta Region and that as they speak, 10 people had died in Keta, 10 in Anlo and so on and so forth.
“These boys kept travelling to and from Ho and I tell you the whole Volta Region was thrown into confusion.”
Dzamesi said after thorough investigation together with the Regional Director of the Ghana Education Service and the Regional Director of Health, it was established that not a single child died from the administration of the drug and not a single child collapsed.
“Of course parents who believed the rumour and whose children took the drugs decided to take their children to the hospital just in case. These children who took the drugs and heard of people dying had some anxiety and therefore felt they had to vomit out the drug.
“I want to assure the whole of the Volta Region, that this diabolic propaganda, perpetrated by NDC will be investigated and those who continue to propagate wrong information if found out will be arrested and will face the full rigours of the law.”
At the press conference were representatives from the WHO, UNICEF, the directorates of Education and Health.
They later toured some of the schools to encourage the teachers to administer the drugs.
