The campaign team of former first lady, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings has accused executives of the National Democratic Congress of treating Dr. Ekwow Spio Garbrah unfairly.Mr. Berrick Namburr, campaign coordinator for Nana Konadu Agyeman- Rawlings' bid to lead the NDC in the 2012 presidential election described as “suspicious”, the failure by the executives to extend the deadline, at least for two days, to ensure a successful filing by the former vice-chairman of the party.Spio-Garbrah could not meet the June 1, 2011 submission deadline for the return of flagbearer nominations forms he had picked two weeks earlier and cited “technical challenges” and machinations by persons within the NDC to thwart his efforts at contesting the position.Having sacrificed his presidential ambitions, at least for the next five years, Dr. Ekwow Spio-Garbrah declared his readiness to back either of the two frontliners - President John Mills or Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings ahead of the party’s primary in July.His only condition, he told Joy News, is to be officially invited by either of the two candidates who values and cherishes his contributions not only for the candidate’s success in the primary but the general elections in 2012.Whilst President Mills' campaign team appears to be dragging its feet, his contender, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings appears more likely to benefit from any alliances Dr. Spio-Garbrah may build.Berrick Namburr told Myjoyonline.com the party hierarchy has treated Spio unfairly and hinted he and his other team members would gladly welcome and indeed appeal to Spio-Garbrah to their side, especially given that the former vice-chairman is himself equally disenchanted with the performance of the Mills administration as is Mrs Rawlings.“The party hierarchy has not been fair in this whole arrangement. They have led us into where we are because when you are given such a position you have to play at least a neutral (role),” he said.“...I have already stated we are doing this on the issues of principles… It is not ministers who assess the performance of government, it is the people on the ground that assess the performance of government… I believe Spio is also talking the same line so we have asked that he should come and join us to file,” he said.High ranking officials within the governing NDC have expressed worry over accusations of intimidation, regretting it would be a major ammunition for the opposition NPP ahead of the 2012 elections.But Namburr noted that those officials must rather be worried at the collateral damage the intimidation would have on the NDC delegates most of who will feel threatened and consequently withdraw from the party’s activities.He is convinced the campaign message of Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings is resonating with the party delegates and in July, they will vote massively for the ex-first lady.Play the attached audio for excerpts of the interviewStory by Nathan Gadugah/Myjoyonline.com/Ghana
