An attempt by the Mayor of Kumasi to counsel parents to be more responsible in caring for their children has left a sour taste in the mouths of families of three youths who drowned at the Sofoline interchange project in Kumasi.
The children reportedly drowned in a deep, water-filled trench at the project site on Saturday whilst playing football.
Samuel Sarpong was part of a delegation that paid a visit to the bereaved family Monday afternoon to commiserate with them on the loss of their children but his comments got the families further distressed.
Whilst sharing his condolences, the Mayor said the incident should be a painful lesson to all parents.
He admitted that there was no warning signal at the project site but said if the parents were a bit more vigilant in their parental responsibilities, perhaps, the incident would not have occurred.
But the bereaved families are angry with the comments by the Mayor.
Spokesperson for the family, Kojo Sakyi said the parents cannot be blamed for the incident.
He said if there should be anyone to blame at all, the Mayor and other officials who failed to provide playgrounds for the children should take responsibility for the tragedy.
Meanwhile, Nhyira FM’s Ohemeng Tawiah reported the families were also disenchanted with an amount of money provided by the Regional Security Council.
According to him, the unspecified amount was donated as a token to the families but they (bereaved families) considered it to be compensation for the lost lives and therefore unacceptable.
