Magnus Rex Danquah, Chief Executive of RICS Consult, has challenged Ghanaians to make the best of the economic benefits of the 2010 World Cup scheduled to kick-start in South Africa. He said participation in the World Cup comes with a lot of benefits and it is incumbent on Africans especially Ghanaians to go the extra mile to devise ways for it to reflect positively on the country's economy. Mr Rex Danquah, who served as the Chief Operating Officer of the Ghana 2008 Africa Cup of Nations and the 9th Hockey Africa Cup for Nations, Ghana 2009 made this remarks during a symposium organised by the Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) on the preparations of Sports journalists for the World Cup in Accra on Friday. Speaking on the topic "The Socio-economic impact of the South Africa 2010 FIFA World Cup and potential challenges facing the media," Rex Danquah expressed regret that Ghanaians are yet to realize the economic benefits of the World Cup despite making her second successive appearance. Rex Danquah said the participation in the World Cup comes with a lot of benefits which can impact positively on all aspects of the economy when the opportunities are identified and utilised. On merchandising and branding, he said little has been seen in that regard despite several opportunities prevailing in that section. Rex Danquah urged the Brand Ghana secretariat to collaborate with the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and the Ministry of Youth and Sports to work towards reaping much benefits of the country's participation at the World Cup. He mentioned that the biggest legacy for Africa after the successful hosting of the World Cup will be to put the continent in a good stead to host the Olympic Games. The renowned Sports administrator also urged Sports Journalists who will be travelling to South Africa to liaise with the Ghana High Commission in the areas of accommodation and transportation to ease any difficulties they might face.
