President John Mahama has asked Ghanaians to emulate the generosity of the spirit that was characteristic of the life of the late president John Atta Mills and forgive those who vilified him.
President Mahama was addressing a sea of mourners at the Efua Sutherland Park where thousands of Ghanaians converged for the One Week remembrance of the late President Mills.
Mr Mahama said the former president was a man of peace with a forgiving heart.
That, he said should encourage his family to forgive those who criticized him harshly - even unjustifiably.
Vengeance, he said, is of God and people must resist the temptation to retaliate the vilification president Mills suffered.
Setting the tone for his campaign in a subtle manner, the president said even though he was fairly young, God in His infinite wisdom had chosen him for the burdensome task of leading the nation.
Describing himself as the first post independence-born Ghanaian to ascend to the presidency, Mr Mahama said it was an arduous task placed on his young, feeble shoulders and called on the young people of Ghana to rally behind him to demonstrate to the older generation, that they are capable and responsible.
Myjoyonline.com's Dorcas Efe Mensah reported there was a stampede at the park.
