Former England boss Sven Goran Eriksson has urged Steven Gerrard to quit Liverpool if he wants to win the Premier League title. The Liverpool captain has won almost every trophy at Anfield except the league title and Sven believes Gerrard will not fulfil his dream with the current squad. “I don’t begrudge a good guy like Steven winning the Premier League. But maybe he needs to change clubs if he wants to win that title," he was quoted as telling in The Sun. Perhaps he was inferring that the Liverpool talisman should do a Robin van Persie style switch to another Premier League club. The Arsenal captain refused to seek an extension on his contract at Emirates frustrated by their failure to end a six-year trophy drought last season. Gerrard, 32, signed a long-term deal at the start of the year and will be a club ambassador when he retires. Sven said: "Steven Gerrard is Mr Liverpool and he has won the Champions League, FA Cup, Super Cup and League Cup with them. The question is whether he will ever win a Premier League title?" Despite the best-laid plans of former Swansea manager Brendan Rodgers, Sven was adamant Liverpool does not have what it takes to rise from their mid-table position last term. He said: “As things look now, absolutely not. “A lot of things have to change at Liverpool for that to happen. “The owners have to pump in more money and buy the right players. “Andy Carroll and Stewart Downing have been expensive signings but have not been a success. “When I look at their team I see just three world-class players — Gerrard, Pepe Reina and Luis Suarez.” Liverpool are already off the pace after picking up one point from their first two games of the season despite a pulsating 2-2 draw at home against champions Manchester City. Eriksson added: “Both my dad and I have been Liverpool fans since the club’s heyday in the 1980s but the Liverpool we see today are far from the top level. “They simply cannot lose 3-0 to a team like West Brom. It is too bad.”
