Ghana's sports sector will now be under the supervision of the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, as part of an institutional restructure by government.
In exercise of the president's powers under section 11 (3) of the Civil Service Act, 1993 (P.N.D. Law 327), John Dramani Mahama's decision effectively ends the union of sports and youth sectors as one Ministry.
Thursday's decision also confirmed that the Youth Ministry will now stand alone, under the name "Ministry of Youth Development and Empowerment".
In total, there are twenty-three ministries, seven fewer than the previous government's (thirty).
Meanwhile, president John Mahama is expected to name the twenty-eight Sports Minister next week, as among the next batch of ministerial appointments.
Former Sports Minister Nii Lantey Vanderpuije, and Wisdom Kobla Woyome chairman of the Parliamentary Select Committee for Sports under the eighth parliament, are the frontrunner for the position.
