President John Mahama has been appointed chair of a crack political committee of the governing National Democratic Congress to lead the party into victory in the 2016.
The political committee inaugurated today by the party's General Secretary Johnson Asiedu Nketia has vice president Kwasi Amissah-Arthur and a tall list of experienced NDC gurus as members.
In what appears to be a unity of purpose, the committee is made up of past and present national executives of the party, some of whom have served in government.
Former chair of the party Kwabena Adjei, current chair Kofi Portuphy, vice secretary Koku Anyidoho, Foreign Minister Hanna Tetteh, Prof Kwamena Awhoi ,Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, Alhaji Hudu Yahya have all been named as members.
Others include Kofi Adams, Afriyie Ankrah, Dan Abodakpi, Haruna Iddrisu, Faustina Nelson, Alban Bagbin, Hajia Mahama, Bede Ziedeng are all members.
Eight other committees including an economic committee were also inaugurated today.
Deputy Secretary Koku Anyido told Joy News' Dzifa Bampoh the inauguration of the committees is in fulfilment of the party's constitution.
According to him, the constitution of the party stipulates that after every congress, committees must be constituted for people to assist elected and appointed officials to achieve the goals of the party.
He said the committee members which is made up of past and present party officers is testimony of the unity of purpose within the party.
With the quality of personnel lined up in the committees, the deputy General Secretary is convinced the party's machinery has been well oiled for victory in 2016.
Koku Anyidoho dismissed criticisms against the naming of the president as member of the committee.
Some critics believe the president would be allowed to concentrate on pressing national issues whilst the other members deal with matters of the committee but Anyidoho maintained the party did not err in naming the president as chair of the committee.
He said the president is the leader of the party and should definitely be part of the committee.
Contributing to the constitution of the committees, a senior political science lecturer at the University of Ghana Dr Seidu Alidu described the committees as "brains" or operational machines of the party.
He observed that political parties are big organisations which sometimes has to be broken down to minute groups for purposes of efficiency.
He was quick to add that the new committees appear more to be an election winning machinery than one implement and execute the manifesto promises of the party.
