A man has died after apparently slipping in his bathroom and stabbing himself through the eye with the handle of a toilet brush.
The 60-year-old, who has not been named, had to have his skull opened in a bid to remove the brush, which had embedded through his right eye. However, he died in hospital despite doctors’ attempts to save him.
The incident happened at his home in the town of Istra, near Moscow, Russia, according to the Moskovsky Komsomolets newspaper.
Doctors gave him strong antibiotics and carried out various scans including an MRI and X-rays.
They said that the toilet brush became cut off above the eye and it was not possible to pull it out. Bones also broke in his skull that doctors feared could have caused brain damage.
They opened his skull and took out the broken bone before removing the toilet brush handle.
After the initial operation he remained in a coma and was moved to a hospital closer to home for more treatment. However, he never regained consciousness and died a few days later.
