The Deputy Managing Director of Metro TV, Haruna Alhassan has won the New Patriotic Party (NPP) primaries to replace jailed MP, Adamu Dramani Sakande.
Adamu Dramani Sakande was sentenced to two years imprisonment by the Fast-Track High Court in July after he was found guilty of false declaration of office, perjury and deceiving a public officer.
Haruna Alhassan polled 287 votes in Saturday’s primaries to beat three other candidates- Gabiana Agbanwa Abugi, a Bawku-based nurse who had 133 votes, Mohammed Tahiru Nambe, former Upper East regional youth organizer of the party and Baba Seidu Issaka, a businessman.
The exercise was generally peaceful and in a brief acceptance speech, Haruna Alhassan dedicated his win to those who lost their lives for the party in the constituency and pledged to work hard to retain the seat for the NPP.
“I will love to dedicate this win to our departed brothers … I want to also thank my team that worked very hard,” to secure this victory, “It is a victory for the NPP.”
