The National Communications Authority has been urged to emulate Kenya’s example on halting the influx of fake mobile handsets into Ghana. Currently, Kenya has registered a near zero rate of fake and imitated phones in its market.
Ghana’s mobile phone market is littered with fake mobile phones, with regulatory agencies struggling to cut down the numbers.
The incidence hurts distributors of original phone brands. Consumers are also sometimes shortchanged.
But Group Managing Director of phone distribution company, MIDCOM, Akash Kumar said Kenya found a perfect solution to the nuisance and Ghana can take a cue from them.
He explain that in collaboration with service providers, distributors and phone manufacturers, the NCA can use a phone’s Unique Identification Number.
This number can be sent via text message to a designated number of the appropriate phone manufacturer for verification.
MIDCOM Ghana has been awarded the exclusive rights to distribute Nokia phones in Ghana.
